Over the last 35 years I have grown-up, graduated, lived, worked and raised a family in the little town of 1, 200 that my parents decided to call home. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - COVID-19 isn't stopping the opening of the new Academy of Fine and Performing Arts Magnet School this fall. It has been in the works since January 2019 and is the latest addition to Springfield Public School choice programs. It stems from a partnership with Springfield Little Theater (STL) and the Foundation for SPS. The program will run out of The Springfield Little Theaters Judith Enyeart Reynolds School of the Performing Arts, otherwise known as The Judy. Fifty fifth-graders from across the district were selected to be apart of the arts-integrated learning program. Students will spend their entire academic year learning about the arts; From the visual aspects to the theater and performance part. Although SPS choice programs are typically interactive and hands-on, things will look different during its first year. "We'll be following the same reduced capacity learning model that all of Springfield Public School students will have the opportunity for the seated learning aspect, " explained SPS Choice Program Coordinator, Kelsey Barbo.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Springfield Public School leaders announced Tuesday, in a letter to parents, students will return to a five-day school week after Spring Break. The new schedule begins March 22. School leaders say they consulted with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department to make the decision. The district will keep COVID-19 safety protocols in place. READ LETTER TO PARENTS: Springfield Public Schools, in consultation with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, has determined it is appropriate to resume the regular schedule of learning five days a week in the classroom when students return from Spring Break. Students in grades preK-12 who are enrolled in the In-Person Learning Option will begin attending school five days a week Monday, March 22. Students who are enrolled in the Fully Virtual Option will continue to participate in online learning through the end of the school year. The district will maintain critical health and safety protocols which have proven successful in limiting the spread of COVID-19 in the school setting.
